Ireland’s first blood transfusion

Lifeblood

Blood is vital stuff. The average adult has about five litres of it inside their body and is constantly making fresh blood to keep stocks high; if you lose too much too quickly you will die. Blood carries oxygen and essential nutrients and immune cells around your body, and takes carbon dioxide and other waste products to your lungs and kidneys to be excreted.

Scientists from Ireland have added to our understanding of how haemoglobin works, and of how to keep blood fresh, paving the way for life-saving blood banks.
